Senior Preparatory

Grades 4 – 7

From Grades 4-7, we have five classes in each grade. The Intermediate and Senior Phases operate on a six-day timetable to allow us to include other relevant subjects such as Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), allowing pupils to engage in role-play, discussions and group work.

This is critical to help them to understand themselves and their everyday interactions with people and society. Through academic rigour and experiential learning, we equip our pupils with the tools to adapt, innovate, and seize opportunities in an evolving world.

Subjects And Phases

Maths streaming takes place in the Intermediate and Senior Phases to allow for smaller groups of pupils and more effective learning. Subjects for the Intermediate Phase include English, Afrikaans, isiZulu, Social Sciences (History and Geography), Life Skills (Physical Education, Music, Art & Life Skills) and Natural Sciences and Technology. The Senior Phase has the additional subjects of Economic Management Sciences and Technology.

Coding and Robotics is introduced to all pupils during the Information and Communication Technology (ITC) lessons. Alternating lessons in Chess and Media are also offered to respectively enhance strategic thinking and broaden understanding of topics covered in particular subjects. The Cultural lessons offered each cycle afford the choirs and marimba members to hone their skills.

The introduction of Chrome Books, to our Senior Phase and the use of tablets by our Intermediate Grades have enhanced research skills and enriched the learning experience.

Beyond The Classroom

Our pupils participate in practical activities and educational excursions to keep learning relevant and meaningful for our changing times. It is paramount that we provide the best foundations for our pupils to achieve at their best.

We encourage our pupils to participate in external Olympiads such as SIAT, Conquesta, Quintathlon, Horizon Maths, Beyond Maths and the like. As well as evaluating our pupils’ achievements, these external Olympiads allow our school to compete on National and International levels.

Our pupils actively participate in group projects, team-building activities, and cooperative learning experiences. By fostering a collaborative environment, we cultivate empathy, respect, and effective interpersonal skills, preparing our pupils to thrive in diverse settings and embrace multiculturalism.

Preparing Our Pupils For The Future

In today’s dynamic global landscape, the significance of adaptability and resilience has never been more apparent. At Umhlali Preparatory School, we are committed to preparing our students for the ever-changing world. Through the integration of technology and a holistic, interdisciplinary approach, we empower our pupils to not just welcome change, but also to foster their creative thinking and confidently overcome challenges.

Our educational philosophy combines rigorous academics with hands-on experiential learning to provide our students with the essential skills they need to thrive, innovate, and grasp opportunities in an ever-evolving world.

Leadership And Service

We have taken a transformative approach to leadership and replaced the traditional prefect system with a focus on Service Groups. We provide every Grade 7 pupil the opportunity to demonstrate leadership qualities, fostering a sense of responsibility and service.

These Grade 7 Service Groups involve the active participation of every Grade 7 pupil, enabling them to engage in problem-solving, collaboration, effective communication and leadership while serving their school.

We are dedicated to promoting an ethos of altruism and instilling in our pupils a genuine desire to serve and support their school community, fostering a spirit of selflessness and empathy.

By embracing servant leadership and providing opportunities for our senior pupils to actively engage in service, we are cultivating future leaders who possess strong values and a deep understanding of the importance of giving back.
